An affordable way to get the shiplap look: Materials & Step by Step Guide

If you’re looking for a cheaper way to shiplap then you have come to the right place. My handyman has given me all the materials and a step-by-step guide to blog about for you guys! I have received so many questions about the walls in our house as well as all of the home decor (which will be on the blog in the next couple of weeks). Today is all about the shiplap in my closet/office area… so let’s get started.

Materials Needed:

  • 1/4 inch plywood cut into 8 inch strips lengthwise
  • Spackling to fill cracks and nail holes
  • Air compressor w/ finish nail gun
  • 5/8 inch finish nails
  • Paint of your choice
  • Paint brushes

4 steps to the perfect shiplap look

  1. Gather all of your materials & start by cutting the boards to the desired lengths. Loews or Home Depot can cut them for you but we decided to cut them on our own so we wouldn’t have to keep going back if it didn’t fit properly (cut the boards to different lengths to eliminate joints from lining up vertically).
  2. Once you have the boards cut, you can start applying to the wall that you wish. You want to nail boards to the wall using a 1/4 inch spacer between the boards to give that shiplap appearence.
  3. Once you have finished nailing all of the boards to the wall, go back behind and spackle any holes or unwanted cracks.
  4. Finally, start painting the cracks in between boards first, then start painting the entire wall ( we used paint rollers first, then went over them with brushes immediately after to make it look more appealing).

See! Super easy and I can promise you’ll be saving a lot of money doing it yourself and with the materials we used. We plan on doing one more wall so that I can complete another DIY that I am super excited about.. so stay tuned!!

Kenzie
